A Light-Emitting Diode is a semi-conductor based form of Electroluminescence. It is built by taking a 'silicon wafer' (a thin slice of pure silicon) and adding special materials to parts of the silicon using a process called "doping". This changes the electrical properties of the silicon and current can flow in one direction only. Other materials are then added to this wafer of silicon to make it produce light when a current is passed. By addition of differnt materials, LED's can be made to produce light of colours in the visibile light spectrum and also light in the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum. |
