PV home power systems

Solar or photovoltaic (PV) panels convert sunlight into electricity that can be used to power a variety of devices from calculators to home appliances. The basic PV building block is the photovoltaic cell. Referred to as a "cell", because it produces direct
current (DC) electricity like a battery.

In practical applications of photovoltaic energy, groups of cells are unified to form a module (modules may be connected into an array). PV power cells are made from silicon, the same material as computer chips. When sunlight is absorbed by the specially treated silicon, electrons are released within the panel and an electrical current is generated.

Photovoltaic PV systems can also be designed to sell any surplus energy back to electricity grid rather than store the energy. This overcomes many of the shortcomings of using batteries; including high cost, storage, limited useful lifespan and environmentally unfriendly components. In some remote areas, however, there may be no connection to the grid available making the use of batteries a necessity. Lumisigns Ltd. offers both grid connected and stand alone PV systems.

There are 4 main components in most solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, these are:

1. A solar power module: a collection of the solar power producing arrays. This converts the suns energy into DC electricity.

2. Roof mounting structure: consists of an aluminium or stainless steel assembly to mount the panels onto the roof of a building. There are two major types: (i) roof integrated where the solar power panels replace the roofing tiles (ii) on-top mounting where the solar power panels sit above existing roof tiles.

3. Inverter: to convert the DC (direct current) electricity into AC (alternating current) so that the generated electricity can be used by home appliances or sold back to the grid.

4. Energy meter: to determine the amount of solar energy generated by the panels consumed and amount sold back to the grid.

Solar home back up

In areas where the electrical grid is unreliable and power outages are common our solar backup solution is a viable alternative to noisy diesel generators. The battery charges up during the day and has sufficient power to run essential functions like the lights. We sell various power options from a 250W model that will power up to 2x 9W lights for 3 hours per day to a 1000W option that will power up to 10 lights for 6 hours per day or a TV for 2 hours per day. Please contact us for more details and we will advise you on the options that will best suit your needs.
